South Lebanon Community Church was established on January 1, 2019 as a church with the purpose of “Lifting Up the Name of Jesus.” Our vision is to “Bring the hope of Jesus to the Lebanon community and beyond.” We want to be shaped by God’s Word, serve our neighbors near and far and be a place to call home for all people – all for the glory of God!
Although South Lebanon Community Church was established on January 1, 2019, we are blessed with roots of faithfulness that stretch back more than 100 years. South Lebanon Community Church was born out of the Midway Church of the Brethren, a congregation that was originally organized in 1902 from part of the Tulpehocken Congregation with 195 members. At its inception, the Midway Congregation alternated meeting at the Bucher Meeting House on Schaeffer Road and the Midway Meeting House, both in South Lebanon, and was a part of the Church of the Brethren. Later, the congregation expanded the Midway Meeting House at the current location of 13 Evergreen Road. This building was subsequently enlarged with a sanctuary in 1951, Sunday School classrooms in 1987 and 1995, and the addition of a Family Life Center in 2001 that was enlarged in 2013 to facilitate worship services.
Over more than 100 years, the church has seen many changes and much growth; yet, the goal to be faithful to God’s Word and obedient to the call to make disciples has been constant. The church was served by free ministers until 1963. At that time, L. John Weaver became the first pastor, suceeded by Hartman Rice in 1980; Jack Harpold in 1983; and Charles Ilyes in 2005. In 1995, Midway Church planted a new fellowship in the city of Lebanon called Cornerstone Christian Fellowship that remains an active church today.
We at South Lebanon Community Church deeply desire to remain faithful to the call God has for His church – to proclaim the hope of Jesus Christ and to bear witness to the truth of God as revealed in God’s Word. We are grateful for the deep roots of faithfulness we are blessed with due to the many faithful followers who have gone before us. We are also full of joy and hope to be South Lebanon Community Church in 2019 as we look forward to God doing more than we can ask or imagine by His great power that is at work in His church.
